Disability-income benefit context
| Planning item | Official context | Calculator treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly disability-income benefit | MoneySense describes a fixed monthly benefit that may not fully replace prior income and may be subject to a policy limit | Never estimated; counted only when the user confirms the entered amount and timing |
| Deferred or waiting period | MoneySense notes that benefits usually begin only after the policy's deferred period and subject to its disability definition | Uses only the user-entered number of months; never determines disability, eligibility or approval |
The calculator models a cash-flow scenario, not whether a policy definition is met or a claim will be approved.
Employee, self-employed and platform-worker context
| Work arrangement | Official context | Calculator treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | MOM paid-sick-leave entitlement depends on Employment Act coverage, service and other conditions; an employer may provide additional benefits | No entitlement is inferred; the user enters and confirms any paid leave or employer benefit |
| Self-employed person | CPF Board gives a general rule of thumb of around six months of expenses for a liquid emergency fund | No reserve target is imposed; only the liquid amount explicitly selected by the user is used |
| Platform worker | CPF contribution treatment depends on cohort and opt-in status, and platform earnings may come from more than one operator | No CPF or platform support is inferred; the user enters any confirmed income or support |
Deterministic month-ledger method
| Step | Treatment |
|---|---|
| 1. Residual earned income | User-entered take-home income less the user-entered interruption percentage |
| 2. Confirmed replacement resources | Residual income plus only confirmed paid leave, disability benefit and other income |
| 3. Reserve use | Applies no more than the explicitly selected liquid reserve to that month's gap |
| 4. Uncovered shortfall | Essential spending less confirmed resources and reserve used, floored at S$0 |
